Lots of The Imaginative Conservative news this morning. Everyone’s favorite curmudgeon John (“Don’t call me isolationist to my face”; “If you post anonymously one more time, I’ll kick your butt”) Willson is, today, celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary. Our sincere congratulations to John and his beautiful bride, Helen. Happy anniversary!
Winston and Barbara Elliott’s son, Winston IV, is getting married tomorrow, somewhere in the wilds of barely populated Texas.
And, Dedra and I are sitting in the maternity wing of the Hillsdale County Hospital, eagerly awaiting our seventh child. No, for the 1000th time, we’re not Mormon, dangit. We’re Papist pigdogs and proud of it.
Our little reflection of Jesus and His Mother is, at this point, to be named Veronica Rose.
Books on the topic of this essay may be found in The Imaginative Conservative Bookstore. The Imaginative Conservative applies the principle of appreciation to the discussion of culture and politics—we approach dialogue with magnanimity rather than with mere civility. Will you help us remain a refreshing oasis in the increasingly contentious arena of modern discourse? Please consider donating now.
We hope you will join us in The Imaginative Conservative community. The Imaginative Conservative is an online journal for those who seek the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. We address culture, liberal learning, politics, political economy, literature, the arts, and the American Republic in the tradition of Russell Kirk, T.S. Eliot, Edmund Burke, Irving Babbitt, Paul Elmer More, Wilhelm Roepke, Robert Nisbet, M.E. Bradford, Eric Voegelin, Christopher Dawson, and other leaders of Imaginative Conservatism (Visit our Bookstore to find books by/about these men).
We address a wide variety of major issues including: What is the essence of conservatism? What was the role of faith in the American Founding? Is liberal learning still possible in the modern academy? Should conservatives and libertarians be allies? What is the proper role for the American Republic in spreading ordered liberty to other cultures/nations?
We have a great appreciation for the thought of Russell Kirk, T.S. Eliot, Irving Babbitt, and Christopher Dawson, among other imaginative conservatives. However, some of us look at the state of Western culture and the American Republic and see a huge dark cloud which seems ready to unleash a storm that may well wash away what we most treasure of our inherited ways. Others focus on the silver lining which may be found in the next generation of traditional conservatives who have been inspired by Dr. Kirk and his like. We hope that The Imaginative Conservative answers T.S. Eliot’s call to “redeem the time, redeem the dream.”
Veronica Rose will be our special child, of course, although I don't know how she can top your others. Our Ellie Anna turns ONE! on June 12. Great grand daughters are almost as fine as daughters and grand daughters.
We are having a party next week to celebrate #50. Today is the "real" day, and I asked Helen what she wanted to do. Well, she wants to go to the ordination to the priesthood of Dan Kogut, the wonderful young man who served as an intern at our parish last year. What a girl!
Thanks for the thought, Brad.
How did the title of my new piece get on yours about Mike Church?
Wahoooooooooooo!!!! What a great day in Christendom. Congratulations to all!
