The 22nd of July is Mary Magdalene’s day, and continuing my sequence of sonnets written in response to the church year I post this for her. As usual you can hear the poem by clicking on its title or on the ‘play’ button.
This sonnet is drawn from my collection Sounding the Seasons, published by Canterbury Press here in England. You can hear the sonnet by clicking on the ‘play’ button if it appears in your browser or by clicking on the title of the poem.
Men called you light so as to load you down,
And burden you with their own weight of sin,
A woman forced to cover and contain
Those seven devils sent by Everyman.
But one man set you free and took your part
One man knew and loved you to the core
The broken alabaster of your heart
Revealed to Him alone a hidden door,
Into a garden where the fountain sealed,
Could flow at last for him in healing tears,
Till, in another garden, he revealed
The perfect Love that cast out all your fears,
And quickened you with love’s own sway and swing,
As light and lovely as the news you bring.

The Imaginative Conservative applies the principle of appreciation to the discussion of culture and politics—we approach dialogue with magnanimity rather than with mere civility. Will you help us remain a refreshing oasis in the increasingly contentious arena of modern discourse? Please consider donating now.
We hope you will join us in The Imaginative Conservative community. The Imaginative Conservative is an online journal for those who seek the True, the Good and the Beautiful. We address culture, liberal learning, politics, political economy, literature, the arts, and the American Republic in the tradition of Russell Kirk, T.S. Eliot, Edmund Burke, Irving Babbitt, Wilhelm Roepke, Robert Nisbet, Richard Weaver, M.E. Bradford, Eric Voegelin, Christopher Dawson, Paul Elmer More, and other leaders of Imaginative Conservatism. Some conservatives may look at the state of Western culture and the American Republic and see a huge dark cloud which seems ready to unleash a storm that may well wash away what we most treasure of our inherited ways. Others focus on the silver lining which may be found in the next generation of traditional conservatives who have been inspired by Dr. Kirk and his like. We hope that The Imaginative Conservative answers T.S. Eliot’s call to “redeem the time, redeem the dream.” The Imaginative Conservative offers to our families, our communities, and the Republic, a conservatism of hope, grace, charity, gratitude, and prayer.

Mary M, Whether “sent by Everyman” or not, by her own free actions done with her own free will, provided the welcoming pathway for the demons to enter her. No man “forced” her to engage in her own free actions. she was not raped, she was a business woman, in the business of prostitution, the proto-pro-death successful feminist sex worker. Jesus, the “Gardener” revelaed to her who He was – because she came to the tomb unbelieving, she came to anoint a DEAD body. Clearly the ancient tradition is true – that Jesus first appeared, glorious and risen, to His mother who not only loved Him as only a mother can, but who believed, from the Annunciation,to the Nativity,to Cana, to Calvary.and to Easter Sunday – of course, her Son was going to rise! There is no better patron saint today whose intercession should be invoked to bring pro-death pro-abortion pro-democrat females to Jesus than St. Mary Magdalen. Guy McClung, Texas
Agree with you about “business woman”, it was such a time.
