The case of Naomi Wolf is a sign of our sinister times. We do not know whether she will develop her faith and embrace Church teachings. Such conversions are best left in the hands of God, Whose ways are mysterious and inscrutable. However, her desperate plea for help against the principalities and powers of darkness contains the seed of Faith that may blossom one day.
We live in ever-more sinister times.
To call our times sinister might appear extreme since evil has always existed and manifested itself to humanity. However, evil has long advanced by hidden means to corrupt with greater ease. Darkness descends gradually amid the decadent mediocrity of our days.
However, this age-old tactic is changing. The chilling presence of pure evil appears much more frequently. The shock of a raw encounter with this dark force is enough to shake us in the depths of our souls and even change our lives. This radicalized evil startles, raises questions, and invites supernatural reflections not common in our secular times.
Hitting a Nerve
Such is the curious case of Naomi Wolf. She encountered this dark force when she challenged a cherished liberal narrative. Her particular angle hit a sensitive nerve that unleashed a disproportionate wrath that she qualified as evil.
Dr. Naomi Wolf is not given to wild imaginings or conspiracy theories. She graduated from Yale University and received her doctorate from Oxford. As a bestselling author, columnist, and professor, she is outspoken in her defense of all leftist causes (including procured abortion) and is not afraid to say what she thinks.
However, she recently encountered the “principalities and powers of darkness.” Her recent article, “Is it Time for Intellectuals to Speak about God?” describes this discovery process in brilliant detail.
Experiencing the Wrath of the Liberal Establishment
Her case triggered this wrath because it threatened a vital narrative crucial to a progressive agenda. It need not be a single issue. It can be the pandemic, the vaccine, the economic meltdown, or breakdown of order. Indeed, conservatives have long experienced the disproportional wrath of the opposition on a whole spectrum of issues. What is different today is the increased intensity of this wrath and the willingness of liberals to attack their own.
Dr. Wolf’s crime was questioning the effects of the vaccine on young girls. She has long produced similar exposés denouncing big business interests, all to the applause of the liberal establishment. She expected the same reaction to her well-researched articles.
However, she was shocked to find herself on the wrong side of the narrative. She soon discovered that life-long, well-educated colleagues, journalists, editors, and professionals – critical thinkers all—rejected her broadside and clung to the talking points of CNN and other major media. They asked her not to show them the evidence lest they lose status, jobs, or opportunities.
“The progressive, right-on part of the ideological world — my people, my tribe, my whole life — became more and more uncritical, less and less able to reason,” she exclaimed as she found herself “pulped, de-platformed, canceled, re-canceled, de-platformed again, and called insane.” She was accused of being a “pandemic conspiracy theorist” who engaged in “crack-pottery.”
The issue was not the vaccine but the challenge to the narrative. Indeed, The New York Times broke the same story in January 2022, vindicating research similar to hers but not reestablishing her reputation.
Evil Too Massive
She perceived that the broadside was not against her but represented “an infection of the soul,” the abandonment of “the most cherished postwar ideals,” and the dropping of “post-Enlightenment norms of critical thinking.” She was impressed by its orchestration and agility.
This overwhelming attack represented something profound—and sinister. Dr. Wolf concluded that “this edifice of evil is too massive, too quickly erected, too complex and really, too elegant, to assign to just human awfulness and human inventiveness.”
She was perplexed by this intelligent force that was much more powerful than anything she had ever experienced. She recalled the comment of a Christian medical freedom activist who had suffered similar treatment and calumny. He said he found courage in Ephesians 6:12:
“For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.”
When the hammer of evil fell upon her, something clicked that made those words come alive.
The Necessity of a Countervailing Force—God
Indeed, she had encountered the Devil, who embodies evil in its most extreme and radicalized form. She felt “the majestic nature of the awfulness of the evil around us, the presence of ‘principalities and powers’ — almost awe-inspiring levels of darkness and of inhuman, anti-human forces.” This narrative generated “anti-human outcomes” beyond the reach of humans alone.
From this sinister impact, there awakened in her soul a belief in “the presence, the possibility, the necessity of a countervailing force — that of a God.” An evil so big demands a God that can address this danger.
With her tiny faith in an unknown God, she started to pray. She might well pray with the disciples on the boat in the raging sea who awakened Our Lord saying: “Save us, Lord, lest we perish!” (Matt. 8:25)
A Leap of Faith
This literal leap of faith presented Dr. Wolf with many problems. She expressed consternation because her Jewish cultural background does not frame spiritual battles in the dramatic fashion presented during her recent ordeal. Classical liberal authors like her, writing in a postmodern world, are not supposed to talk about God, much less the “principalities and powers of darkness.”
She reflected that the rise of Existentialism after World War II glorified a worldview that celebrates the absence of God and humanity’s essential aloneness. Thus, few dare talk about anything spiritual.
However, she resolved to talk about spiritual combat and “the fate of souls” because “the forces of darkness are so big that we need help”; humans alone cannot solve this predicament.
She does not know how to address this God or even describe Him. All she knows in her primitive faith is to call upon this unknown God who represents the only hope for an evil world.
Lessons From the Case
The case of Naomi Wolf is a sign of our sinister times. We do not know whether she will develop her faith and embrace Church teachings. Such conversions are best left in the hands of God, Whose ways are mysterious and inscrutable. However, her desperate plea for help against the principalities and powers contains the seed of Faith that may blossom one day.
The most encouraging conclusion to this story is that sinister times call forth courageous leader souls who recognize the nature of the evil we face and listen to the voice of grace. As Saint Paul says: “Where sin abounds, grace abounds much more” (5:20). How many thousand Naomi Wolfs are out there that are finding God amid their desperation? With their little faith, they are calling upon a God that they never knew and now grasp. God cannot fail to listen to such pleas.
The case also contains lessons for mediocre believers who do not want to see the spiritual combat and make no effort to battle the principalities and powers. Her cry might also awaken these lukewarm souls. They might pray: O God grant me the small faith of Naomi Wolf. “That I may see!” (Mark 10:51).

From Charles Baudelaire to C. S. Lewis to “Verbal” Kint (The Usual Suspects), the saying runs through the modern world, “The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”
It must be rather a bit of a shock for those who have spent their lifetimes dismissing anything supernatural as superstitious nonsense, to finally come face to face with reality. Especially since that confrontation seems not to be with the Divine, but the malevolent.
Meanwhile, we can pray for our (human) adversaries.
Let us keep Ms. Wolf in our prayers.
I would urge extreme caution, not only in determining whether Dr. Wolf moves forward, but in how she does it as well.
“The case of Naomi Wolf is a sign of our sinister times. We do not know whether she will develop her faith and embrace Church teachings. Such conversions are best left in the hands of God, Whose ways are mysterious and inscrutable. However, her desperate plea for help against the principalities and powers contains the seed of Faith that may blossom one day.”
As the author makes clear early on, those determinations are really not ours to make.
Her experience jibes pretty consistently with that of others who have found God, or those who have been found by God. She has run up against something that her toolkit is inadequate to address. The realization is always humbling. In time it can become enabling. I wish her well.
I read Naomi Wolf’s article “Is it Time for Intellectuals to Speak about God?” and found it quite inspiring. I have followed her work for about two decades and while I disagreed with some of her liberal views, I always felt she was an honest rather than an ideologically-driven thinker. She has been questioning the mainstream narrative for a number of years and has suffered much rejection from her former colleagues because of it. But what moved me most about her turn toward God is her sense that we are currently dealing with spiritual realities, the rulers of the darkness of this world. For secular liberals, this language is mythological. It means that the current situation can only be understood by transcending materialism. I’m wondering if the current situation may not be driving many secularists in the same direction while leading others to double down on their closed outlook.
.
Outstanding! I will pray for Dr. Wolf. Yes she shines the headlights on all of us to “put the pedal to the metal” and charge into the darkness, the blackness of evil with the Light of Christ on High beams
“The case of Naomi Wolf is a sign of our sinister times.”
Indeed. Another writer called them “critical times hard to deal with”. (2 Tim 3:1.)
Like Dr Wolf, St Paul was a credentialed scholar, a Jew by birth and religion (the mainstream faith of his place and time) (Php 3:4-6), and was ‘thrown under the bus’ by his fellows when he dared teach against received tradition and wisdom. (2 Cor 11:21-27)
But it’s equally important for all of us to read Paul more carefully now. The conditions he lists have been indeed with us for a long time – before and after Paul. Back in v.1 though, is his inspired chronology: “But know this. That in _the last days_” will come these critical times.
Do we recognize this important information? Do we notice how it jibes with other prophecies, at Mt 24 and 25, Mr 13 and Lu 21?
Dr Wolf has already shown us that our “best and brightest” are of no comfort, much less substantive help. Per Ps 146:3 we can expect no help from other men, we need super-natural aid. That is exactly what is promised at Mt 6:9,10. How encouraging that is!
Sincere prayer is welcomed by God, from anyone seeking his truth. Dr Wolf is, at least, praying to the right God. David called him “the hearer of prayer” and goes on to say why that’s important. (Ps 65:2) we need to turn to God “while he may be found”. (Isa 55:6)
Wolf is no Christian, and she is heading to a darkness herself. She claims in an interview she saw the real Jesus as a 12 year old boy. I would say, wake up to truth people. Many people claim to have seen Jesus, but it is a Satanic lie. Even Satan himself can transform himself into an angel of light. There is only one way of Salvation, there is only one God, and He is the God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Now, if He be rejected you have another god altogether for even Free Mason’s, Buddhists, and Mormons believe there are many gods as well as other cults do, and none of them can help you. Jesus said, “…Take heed that no man deceive you.” And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many,” And “Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect (believers)” Matthew 24:4, 11, 23-24. The only way of Salvation to anyone is believing the gospel, “How that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures and that He was buried and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3b-4. Jesus is God!
Nicely put. We may be at a point where the false christs are on the rise from an exhausted populace. It seems hard to believe that a humble approach would emerge now. No man comes to the Father but through Christ. It’s the salvation of your soul, not empowerment. This is hard to express and we all need to examine ourselves at this time of strong delusion.Thank you
If this lady is one of the Lord’s Elect, she will most certainly be saved. I was very moved today to read about her acute perception of the evil powers at work in this world, described by her as ‘massive existential evil’ that is beyond what man could do, especially with her coming from a worldly / secular background. She put into words what I had felt for some time and I know for sure that there is only one way through and beyond, one hope, through absolute faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
St Paul’s Second Letter to the Thessalonians really resonates with me at this time:
.1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and by our gathering together unto him, 2 that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled,
neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
The Son of Perdition
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9 even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 and with all deception of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Give Thanks to God
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 14 whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions
which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
I believe that we are now in the End Times and find that my faith is increasing. I encountered a saying recently that has helped with this: ‘Many of us get to Heaven by backing away from hell.’ God bless you all!
Dr. Naomi Wolf is a courageous warrior. This article reveals the secret of her strength. If you dare to shine light into the darkness, you must have the Source of all Light in your heart
Ms. Wolf: If you have children you know the joy the universe can create. Seek the authorship of this joy and you will discover, like me, that it cannot contained and ought to be amplified. That’s what you’re curious about. Bless your curiosity.
This is an immensely interesting, helpful and hopeful article – thank you! I will pray for Naomi… I’m presently reading her book, ‘The bodies of others’.
The realization by Naomi Wolf of ‘evil’ as a concept in an by itself is definitely a crack in her blindness, the blindness that so many suffer from. The leftist intelligentsia simply cannot bring themselves to believe in what they often refer to as the foolishness of believing in the myth of God. Biblical truth has long referenced that the wisdom of mankind is foolishness in God’s eyes. Us lowly conservatives all of a sudden seem correct in this one instance? I would hope and pray that Naomi comes to believe in Jesus. The Apostle Paul attacked (and possibly even killed) Christians before his conversion on the road to Damascus. However, Paul did have an understanding and belief in God prior to this even while not recognizing his Savior despite his Old Testament knowledge. Ms. Wolf is not a religious Jew as far as I know. Still we can pray. I appreciate that this article brought her new book to my attention. I will not be purchasing it however. I can pray for her soul but cannot bring myself to add to her wealth.
