Stand Watie (Cherokee: ᏕᎦᏔᎦ, romanized: Degataga, lit. ‘Stand firm’) (December 12, 1806 – September 9, 1871), also known as Standhope Uwatie, Tawkertawker, and Isaac S. Watie, was a leader of the Cherokee Nation. They allied with the Confederacy, and he was the only Native American to attain a general’s rank in the Civil War, Confederacy or Union. He commanded the Confederate Indian cavalry of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi, made up mostly of Cherokee, Muskogee and Seminole. He was the last Confederate general in the field to cease hostilities at war’s end. —from Wikipedia.

Those who study US History objectively should find it interesting that the last Confederate commander to surrender was a “man of color.” It’s not only the current revisionists of US History, but the entire “war to free the slaves” fallacy historians who deny the role of not only the 5 civilized tribes, but the free blacks, the Hispanics (mainly from Texas), and the Jewish Confederates (over 10,000) played in their support of “the Cause.”
